Calling potential Podcasters and support staff

Hey all,

I have set up separate forum for the management, preparation and planning for a New Zealand based podcast. This forum is restricted so that we can have some privacy during the planning and pre-posting of each episode. It is, however, open to anyone that is willing to participate.

We're looking for the following;

  • Journalists: Interviewers, reporters, etc
  • Panel: virtual talking heads to discuss the current state of Woo-Woo in NZ
  • Topical Sections: Do you have a particular single topic that you think deserves some air time? We can provide a place for that.
  • Researchers: If any claims are being made, and we know they will be, we want to be able to back them up with links to research, studies, journal articles, etc
  • Production: If you have experience in audio editing and/or post production we'd love to hear from you.
  • Artists: Podcasts are able to embed "album art" in the feed. It'd be great to be able to get a unique piece of art for each podcast. Credit can be given in the podcast also.

Currently we have a number that have expressed interest that already have the "podcaster" role. You guys should be able to see a Podcast forum under the Site Admin section.

If anyone else is interested in participating please speak up and I'll assign the role to you.

If you're not a registered member of this site you will need to register first.

Regards,
Gold

podcast

Well, I love researching, so am keen to help out with that. I'd also be keen to interview people. But, basically, I'm keen to help in whatever way I can.
cheers!

Podcast

I would be keen to help out researching and interviewing people if needed, I am sure I can help in whatever is necessary. It is good that finally this is happening.

Podcast

Happy to help in any way I can with research or whatever.
I did have a think about what subjects should be discussed, and I guess what particularly bug me too, such as:
Sensing Murder - yet another season on TV, but still no cases solved. And those psychics raking in the money as a result of their appearances on it
NZQA approved courses where you receive a "diploma" in homeopathy, aromatherapy etc.
Homeopathic remedies for sale at chemists shops, along with bark remedies etc
The appearance of so many health stores in shopping malls, complete with resident iridologists or other quackery

The other thing that I think would be good, is a general promotion of Skeptics in the Pub, to hopefully attract people along who are not S.I.T.P. members, or members of a sceptical group of some kind already.

Sensing Bullshit got another

Sensing Bullshit got another season? WTF?

This definitely needs a report. TVNZ need to be raked over the coals for that one.

Chemists would also be a good one. We could have a segment similar to On The Street. Check the YAS podcast if you haven't already. This segment could have someone walk into a chemist for an on the spot interview asking about the pharmacists position on some of the products they have on the shelves. Highlighting the chemists that don't stock CAM products and digging into those that do. Find out who is ultimately responsible for stocking CAM products and asking why.

Regarding promoting SitP, I'll be getting some Moo mini-cards made up and distributed to the various meetup organisers. They can distribute further from there.

I might be able to provide

I might be able to provide simple album art, though coming up with a badge or something like logotype might be an intial challenge.

We would be looking at

We would be looking at someone, or some people, that can be given a few topics (something coming up in the podcast) and produce the image within a day or so.

Alternatively, we could build a collection of tags for the topics that are coming up and establish a library of images that we can select from as needed. This would prevent the release of the podcast being held up by an artist that is wanting to gt things perfect. :) They can take their time getting it the way they want it.

A library of images is a good

A library of images is a good way to go. We need a clear and sharp logo or logotext in the form of an SVG that we can use anywhere and standard sized rasterised images of that to use as a badge for the artwork.

The standard image size seems to be 300x300. It would be nice to have library of goodies drawn in any way convenient at 600x600 (an easier size to work with than with 300x300).

The fastest way to draw anything appears to be the slightly translucent painting approach as encouraged by the Graffiti flash applet on WePC.com. Even if you can't draw straight, this method is forgiving of mistakes and allows for easy incremental refinement. You don't worry about minor mistakes, you just throw more paint at it, reinforcing the successful strokes until it looks about right.

Having a pressure-sensitive tablet makes it all the much easier, of course.

I would love to be involved in this and up for whatever role you throw at me! I'm a research scientist (molecular microbiology) so probably most suited for a research role but can be flexible if needed.

Heh :) Maybe we should try

Heh :) Maybe we should try it with a flaggon instead of a handle?

Talking Head and Idea

Well I'm good for talking head duty if no one else is volunteering for it. :)

And about two weeks ago I actually sent some emails off to the major parties asking their positions on vaccines. Got responses back from UnitedFutre, props for under 24 hour reply, and National. No one else yet though. I was going to do a blog post after I got a couple more responses but I think it would be good as part of a section for a pilot. :)

I think the 'basics' like vaccines, CAM getting funding, etc. would be good to look at as we only ever hear about what goes on in the States and Europe.

And the NZQA idea sounds really good as well. :)

That's great. What were the

That's great. What were the responses? Or would you like to save that for the podcast/blog post?

The NZQA seems to be improving. Check out NZQA Review of Natural and Traditional Health and Healing qualifications and unit standards on this site. There's probably more that we should check into though.

Given the NZQA's recent actions though I'm more focused on ACC and CAM now. But it'd be good to go over the NZQA and give them a "clean bill of health". :)

Well Peter Dunne's response

Well Peter Dunne's response was the most surprising as it contained effectively no real politiking though I need to do some more research into the things brought up before building the blog post and whatever else.

In fact I'll quote the first line of the answer. "UnitedFuture's commitment to prevention most certainly does include supporting vaccination programmes."

And the important part of Katrina Shanks response for National, "The Government is aware that rates for childhood immunisations in New Zealand are lower than those of most developed countries. Increasing rates of childhood immunisations is one of the six Health Targets, with
the aim of having 85 percent of two year olds fully immunised by July 2010 and 95 percent immunised by July 2012."

So surprisingly positive responses actually.

The main thing now is doing research into what their examples of what they're doing to get it done say. :)

Wow. This is a great

Wow. This is a great response so far. :) I've given you all the podcaster role. You should now have the Podcast forum visible to you. Let me know if you can't see it, otherwise feel free to start posting there.

Another set of ideas

Just before going to sleep last night I had, what I think was, a great idea. How about interviewing someone from Pharmac. It's very NZ centered and as they don't have the funding to buy all the drugs needed they have to apply a procedure to get the best bang for their, and by extension our, money.

Another little idea could be looking at things the government does and seeing if the apply skeptical, evidence based methods to get answers. Not to sure how that could be done though. Just an idea.

What's that sandvich? More topics? Good idea!

Cookie for the reference. And yes, I've got more ideas for topics. :p

For a topical issue, The use of 1080 poison by DoC.
And leading off that it would be interesting to perhaps look at the poison DDT.

And leading off something posted on the front page, what's the state of skepticism in Maori and Polynesian culture? I've never been part of those cultures so I don't know what the state of skepticism is in them. I think it would be interesting to explore, especially in relation to the big effect that organized religion is part of the culture.

Also a very loose and strongly in the maybe box. Skepticism in the military? Things like adapting new tactics, changing structure, etc. I don't think I've seen that covered elsewhere before. It would need a hell of a lot more fleshing out before doing anything about it though.

So yeah, I think it'll be a while until we run out of ideas. ;)

Keen for anything

I'm keen to help out.

I am also a molecular biologist with a background in Evolutionary Biology.

Would be good for research and reporting.

Welcome

I've just added the Podcaster role to your account. You should be able to see the Podcast forum under Site Admin now.

Volunteering

I'd be keen to help, I work in a Library so researching would be easy for me, I've studied broadcasting so could help format prog, organise run sheets, schedules etc if needed.

Hi Lisa, The podcaster role

Hi Lisa,
